Maple Velvet

I was there as a: Overnight RV'er, Family with children

We camped two nights with our twenty-something sons. We played two rounds of golf and thoroughly enjoyed the18-hole golf course. It was in excellent shape. The black tees ensure a long game for the long-ball hitter while the white tees were perfect for the average player. Ladies get the occasional large advantage with forward placed red tees. Though the fairways were narrow at times, often there were hidden landing pads off to the side for those who like to slice or hook. It was very very busy and we waited most of the time at each tee, but we still completed our rounds in 5 hours. Tee time reservations are necessary so call ahead. The club house is a long long way from the weekend sites so you need a car to get your clubs to the course. They mentioned they might be able to provide a shuttle service but we didn't need it. The practice range is excellent with lots of berms, valleys and target greens. The putting and chipping green is very large and includes two bunkers. We had a blast playing target putting and chipping games with all of the teaching gear they have sitting around the practice green. The number of campsites for weekend campers is very limited so you need to book weeks in advance. We received a large bag of free firewood upon check-in which was a nice surprise. All weekend sites (PA-x) back onto Pike Lake and they are very deep. You cannot reach the shore from your site because of high grasses, but you are up high enough to see out across the lake. Across from the site is the 9-hole Lake course. This ensures nice breezes constantly flow through your site - which is a good thing because our site was full sun (PA - 5). Sites to the east and west of us were partial to full shade. There is no privacy between sites at all, but since the sites are a good width and very deep it's not a big deal. All sites seemed to have partial gravel pads right next to the power outlet so your rig is less likely to sit in mud. However there were other worn spots that would make for a muddy site if you don't have a ground mat/rug next to your RV. The rest of the site was full grass. The pool is clean but surprisingly small for such a large campground. There were no posted hours for adults-only swim which was disappointing. In such a small pool it only takes a few splashing kids to ruin a nice relaxing swim after a hot round of golf. The beach is large, sandy, has pavilions for shade and very cool inflatable water slides out in the lake for stronger swimmers. We didn't swim at the beach but it looked fun. It was a long long walk from our weekend site. The washrooms and showers are a long long way from the weekend sites. If your RV doesn't have a bathroom you will be driving to the washrooms. Fortunately they are very clean, bright and the excellent showers are free with large changing space. In summary, we liked this campground for a family with young adults who all like to golf.
